Department of Anthropolgy
Home of the Forensic Anthropology Center, a.k.a. the Body Farm; field laboratory allows examination and documentation of postmortem change in human remains. It has pioneered the science of solving crimes based on time since death. Nearly half of the nation's forensic anthropologists are UT Knoxville graduates.
Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences
Faculty are international leaders in planetary geology, with their discoveries helping to promote space exploration. Undergraduates may work with faculty who are members of the science team for NASA's Mars Rover Missions uncovering new information about the Red Planet.
Marco
The nationally recognized Marco Institute for Medieval & Renaissance Studies offered an interdisciplinary undergraduate program in Medieval Studies. The courses are selected from architecture, art history, foreign language, history, literature, philosophy, political science, and religious studies. Professor Jay Rubenstein was recently awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.
School of Art: Printmaking
The Printmaking program ranks #3 in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report. It promotes international exchange in the arts for students at UT Knoxville and the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland. Students majoring in graphic design, studio art and art history benefit from their work with internationally known faculty.
Department of Theatre
UT Knoxville is one of 17 universities nationwide with its own professional LORT theatre (League of Resident Theatres). The Department of Theatre operates the Clarence Brown Theatre, integrating the professional company wity curriculum to give students the opportunity to work with seasoned professional.
Individualized Programs
Students who do not find a major in the College that matches their academic and professional goals may combine courses from two or more departments into a single area of study through the Individualized Program. These programs must have a clear focus and must not duplicate existing concentrations. Students have designed individualized programs in areas such as writing studies, Japan studies, and critical film studies.
College Scholars Program
The College Scholars Program offers students wide latitude in selecting courses to complete a substantial piece of research, scholarship, or creative imagination, as well as a weekly one-hour seminar. Students must demonstrate a broad range of course work reflecting the philosophy of a liberal arts education, and they must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of one field or several related fields of study.
Undergraduate Research
Numerous opportunities for undergraduates to engage in original and innovative study with a facultty member.
- Many students participate in summer research at Oak Ridge National Lab, receive recognition in the Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement, publich articles, and present their work at national conferences.
- In April 2008, three Arts & Sciences sophomores and juniors received the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, which recognizes students with demonstrated potential for excellence in research in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering.
Pre-Professional Programs
Numerous opportunities are available for students to enter a pre-professional program at UT in a medical, legal, business, or teaching area, and then to complete their training at a professional school. Pre-professional programs also exist in the allied health fields, but these programs do not lead to a bachelor’s degree at UT.
