Goldwater Scholarship Awards

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Foundation has announced that it is awarding 321 scholarships for the 2008–2009 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States, and the University of Tennessee is well represented with three recipients of this premier undergraduate award.

Four College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate students have been recognized by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Foundation.  All of the candidates are part of the College Scholars Program.  Each student’s research interest and career goals are listed below:

Goldwater Scholars

William Bradley O'Dell, Chemistry

Career Goal: Masters and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry. Conduct research on molecular structures and dynamics at scientific institute or international user facility.

Jamie Elise Troupe, Ecology, Evolution and Behavioral Biology/Psychology

Career Goal: Ph.D. in Animal Behavior. Conduct research and work as an applied animal behaviorist.

Casey Jameson Williams, ACS Chemistry/Biomedical Science

Career Goal: Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry. Conduct collaborative research for the synthesis of drugs to treat neurodegenerative diseases and teach at a major research university.

Honorable Mention

Elizabeth Anne Jacobs, Chemistry

Career Goal: Ph.D. in Physical Inorganic Chemistry. Teach at a university which is adjunct to a national laboratory and supervise a research group comprised of both graduate and undergraduate students.

The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,035 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by colleges and universities nationwide.

The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.
