Denver Graninger appointed Rhys Carpenter Faculty Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens for 2008-2010

Denver Graninger, Assistant Professor, Department of Classics, has been appointed Rhys Carpenter Faculty Fellow at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens for 2008-2010. This is among the most prestigious fellowships that an American scholar can receive. The position was advertised nationally and Graninger emerged at the top of a deep and talented pool of candidates.

The appointment combines some graduate teaching responsibilities with unparalleled research opportunities. Graninger will join the faculty of the school as assistant/junior professor and will be working with graduate students in Classics and Archaeology selected from top North American programs. Together with the Mellon Professor and the Director of the School, he will lead field trips to archaeological sites, advise and direct students in individual research, and help to plan the academic program. While in Athens, Graninger will continue working on his current book project, “Minyan Dreams: Cult and Koinon in Hellenistic Thessaly,” a study of the mutual implication of political identity and religious practice in northern Greece ca. 196-27 BCE. He will have access to the Blegen Library, whose holdings in his areas of interest and specialization (Greek religion and history) are among the most comprehensive in the world, and he will be able to travel with ease to study inscriptions and archaeological materials in situ.

His Ph.D. from Cornell University, Dr. Graninger has been at UT since 2005. It is exceptionally rare for a junior scholar to have sustained access to such resources and the opportunity to play so central a role in the intellectual life of a prominent international center of research.
