Applicant: Prof. Flavia Brizio-Skov, Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures
Project: Campus visit by Dr. Massimo Rubboli
Prof. Brizio-Skov received Ready for the World funds to support a three-week visit to UT by Dr. Massimo Rubboli, associate professor of North American history at the University of Genoa. Dr. Rubboli's research focuses on the interplay between religion and politics in U.S.
presidential elections. While at UT, he will present public lectures on this topic and on Italian cinema; he will also appear as a guest speaker in various Italian and History classes.
Applicant: Prof. Gordon Burghardt, Department of Psychology
Project: Enrichment of Psychology 415
Prof. Burghardt received Ready for the World funds to support his efforts to incorporate additional material related to Eastern religions, such as Buddhism and Shinto, to his Psychology of Religion class (Psychology 415, cross-listed as Religious Studies 415). Ready for the World funds will allow Prof. Burghardt to travel to a variety of religious sites and festivals while he is in Kyoto, Japan as a visiting professor at the Kyoto University Museum. Prof. Burghardt will also use Ready for the World funds to purchase books and religious objects for use in his class. Upon his return to UT, Prof. Burghardt will present his findings to the University Studies colloquy on Spirituality and Critical Inquiry.
Applicant: Prof. Scott Frey, Department of Sociology
Project: Formalizing a linkage agreement and planning a study abroad course
The Ready for the World program supported a trip to Vietnam by Prof. Frey to meet with officials and scholars at two Vietnamese universities: the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City) and the Hanoi National University of Education (Hanoi). The purpose of the trip was to establish formal linkages between UT and these institutions. Officials at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities also agreed to support Prof. Frey's Spring 2009 mini-term study abroad course on the political economy of Vietnam; they will provide campus housing for UT students and will sponsor several joint activities for faculty and students as part of the mini-term course. Prof. Frey agreed to sponsor a UT workshop for a group of Vietnamese environmental scientists who will visit the U.S. in October, 2008.
Applicant: Profs. Beauvais Lyons and Koichi Yamamoto, School of Art
Project: Campus visit by Prof. Victoria Goro-Rappaport
Profs. Lyons and Yamamoto secured Ready for the World funding to support Prof. Victoria Goro-Rappaport's stay at UT as a visiting artist. Prof. Goro-Rappaport is a native of Russia and studied set design at the Moscow Art College before becoming a printmaker. She is now a member of the printmaking faculty at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. While at UT, Prof. Goro-Rappaport will give a public lecture about her work, meet with students in the printmaking program, and prepare an edition of prints in the UTK Print Workshop.
Applicant: Prof. Deborah Shmerler, School of Art
Project: Support for the exhibition "Crossing the BLVD"
Prof. Shmerler received Ready for the World funds to help support an appearance at UT's Ewing Gallery of the traveling exhibition "Crossing the BLVD: Strangers, Neighbors, Aliens in a New America." As part of this project, the artists who have assembled the exhibition will make three campus visits, during which they will meet with students in the School of Art, Theatre and Cinema Studies. They will also deliver a gallery reading and present a multimedia performance related to the exhibition. Prof. Shmerler plans to use the exhibition to initiate an "Art and Identity" semester during academic year 2010-2011.
